I was going to stop blogging until I hit either 100 followers or hit Onederland, but since both of those are still out of reach I had to give in. I just can’t let my milestone last night go unblogged about. I have posted this same posting on my new blog (about running) so if you happen for follow that one too (Hi Pie!) then you will see the same thing there. I started that blog to record my running journey – without specifically talking about my band. If you are interesting feel free to check it out – but I won’t hunt you down if you don’t follow it ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last night was the beginning of week three of my training program and our group run. This week we were scheduled to do 5 miles. I have never run five miles in my entire life. Never even wanted to – until now. For some strange reason I wasn’t worried about completing the run anymore. When I finished the four miles last week something clicked into my mind that if I could do this I can do anything – with the right training :)
Luckily when I got there they had divided the slow group into 2 sections. Last week I just about killed myself with the pace and was blown by the last mile. The faster 15 started out with 2-1s (run 2 min/walk 1 min) while the slower group did 1-1s. According to Galloway’s method for my pace I am supposed to do even smaller intervals so I was a little concerned about keeping up, but luckily one of the trainers started a small group of us out in 30-30s.
Now you would think that doing such smaller intervals would have really slowed us down, but for the first mile we were within a few hundred feet of us. It was probably about 2.5 miles before they got completely out of sight, but they still only finished a few minutes ahead of us. But doing the 30-30s was so much easier. Well not easy – it was still hard, but I didn’t feel like I wanted to puke after so I consider it much better.
The best part of the run – I didn’t finish last! Only because the other runners with me took a bathroom break, but still it was nice not to finish last for once.
Here are a couple snapshots of my run – from a numbers point of view. The first is my stats from runkeeper.com. I logged every mile in around 16:30 – except the last, but I forgot to turn it off right away. The second is my calorie burn for the day. The long high peak is the run of course. You can see that I did 80 minutes of vigorous activity (I have defined at >4.8 mets). That is almost my entire run. Even though I am walking during part of the run, the way it happens (frequent but short) allows my burn to stay steady.

You are doing awesome.
ReplyDeleteTJ, please don't stop posting. I love how scientific and logical you are about things, it always gives me really good perspectives.
ReplyDeleteI got a mini unfill today, and I am so happy! Feeling properly hydrated for the first time in over a month. And if I have to watch what I eat a little more, then that's ok...that's what people need to do to lose weight.
I second Yana! I may not comment often, but I do love reading your posts.
ReplyDeleteSuper great job on the running (and I can tell from your map that we must be neighbors!).
Am following your running blog now. You'll get to 100 soon, you're doing great!
ReplyDeletewow. that's great!!!!! 5 miles. i can't imagine, but i am determined to incoporate jogging in.... once i get some of this weight off and don't have the whole a$$ feeling like it's moving at a whole other pace in a whole different direction from the rest of my body as i'm doing it!
ReplyDeleteJust came across your blog and wow is all I can say. Your goals seem attainable, but also a challenge. You are the second person I found who is running and it makes me realize I need to get up off my butt and stop making excuses. I put you one closer to 100, my question for you is when you started running did you run for like 30 seconds then walk for a minute? Where is the chart you used to figure out the lengths of time. I really am so out of shape even after losing 50 pounds.
